(Host) Skiers and riders will get their first taste of the ski season at Killington today. Killington officials say last month’s nor’easter and recent cold temperatures have enabled them to kick off their season five days earlier than last year.

VPR’s Nina Keck has more.

(Keck) Killington is offering upper mountain skiing on four trails and cold temperatures should allow them to continue making snow. While Killington is the first ski resort in the state to open, Mount Snow will open its doors this weekend.

Jen Butson is a spokesperson with Ski Vermont.

(Butson)  It’s not necessarily different from past years, certainly the resorts want to open for business. But over the last 8 seasons, Vermont has seen an average of 132 days of operations – it doesn’t really stray that much."

(Keck) Okemo and Stowe plans to open November 20th and by Thanksgiving, weather permitting, many more Vermont ski resorts will be active. So far, the weather has been cooperating. According to the national weather service, Mount Mansfield received a record 34 inches of snow in October.

For VPR news, I’m Nina Keck.
