Vermont Senate President Peter Shumlin is ready to announce his candidacy for governor.

Shumlin plans to announce his candidacy today at Earth Turbines, a green manufacturer based in Williston. The Putney resident represents Windham County in the state Senate.

The location of the announcement underlines an expected theme of Shumlin’s campaign – that Vermont needs to retire the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant in Vernon and replace power from the plant with renewable energy.

Shumlin joins Senators Susan Bartlett, and Doug Racine, Secretary of State Deb Markowitz and former Sen. Matt Dunne, as Democratic candidates to face off in a primary. Republican Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie is also in the race to replace Governor Jim Douglas, who is stepping down.
