Gov. Peter Shumlin says it’s too early to say specifically what effect automatic federal budget cuts will have on Vermont state government, but he’s worried.

Shumlin told a news conference Wednesday that as worried as he is about the effects of automatic budget cuts on the public sector, he says their impact on the overall economy may be the real problem.

Shumlin is holding a news conference Thursday with incoming Adjutant General Steven Cray to talk about possible effects of the cuts on the Vermont National Guard.

Officials in Vermont have said the cuts could cause hundreds of civilian National Guard employees to have their hours reduced.

The cuts would also affect education and health care programs in Vermont.
