(Host) Governor Peter Shumlin says the state needs to better target the money it spends on the University of Vermont.

The governor gave a policy speech at the university Tuesday where he appointed a task force.

That group will reevaluate the relationship between the state and UVM and will make recommendations to the governor and the university’s new president next summer.

Shumlin says he’s been working with Interim UVM President John Bramley on the initiative.

(Shumlin) "I think that the partnership that John and I have along with the board at the university and this group that’s going to work together can maximize that time so that we can bring in a new president so we have a clear vision of where we need to go and how we strengthen the relationship for the future."

(Host) Neither Shumlin nor Bramley gave any specific recommendations.

But Shumlin says UVM needs to focus on science, engineering, technology and math. The governor says business leaders tell him that those are disciplines that need to be stressed.
