Shumlin Says Vermont Will Stick With RGGI

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin says his state will stick with a greenhouse gas reduction program despite New Jersey’s withdrawal from it.

Republican Gov. Chris Christie announced Thursday that New Jersey would pull out of the 10-state Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative by year’s end, calling it ineffective at combating global warming.

Shumlin, a Democrat, thinks that’s a mistake.

After getting word of Christie’s move, Shumlin said he was deeply disappointed. He says the program is something to be proud of that shouldn’t be rejected for political gain.

He says efforts to combat greenhouse gas emissions, a cause of global climate change, should be increased, not cut.
