An educator and documentary filmmaker has been appointed to a vacant seat representing Windsor County in the House of Representatives.

Slovenia-born Teo Zagar, of Barnard, succeeds Democratic state Representatives Mark Mitchell who resigned after this year’s session because he had been diagnosed with lung cancer.

Zagar will represent the towns of Barnard, Hartford and Pomfret in the legislature.

Zagar is a special education program assistant at Woodstock Union High School.

Governor Peter Shumlin announced his appointment Wednesday.
