Gov. Peter Shumlin is calling for policies to help identify struggling readers to ensure more students can learn to read by the time they finish the third grade.
Shumlin, who is dyslexic, spoke at a policy briefing in Washington, D.C. hosted by the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading and the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation on Monday.
Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, who is also dyslexic, was originally scheduled to join Shumlin.
However, Malloy attended the first meeting of President Barack Obama’s Council of Governors. It’s a group of 10 governors created in 2010 to address matters of national security, homeland defense, and matters of mutual interest pertaining to the National Guard.
Dyslexia is a learning disability with neurological and genetic causes. People with dyslexia have difficulty decoding and recognizing words.
