A building believed to be the oldest secondary school still standing in Vermont has been destroyed by fire.

Officials say lightning hit the Newton Academy building in Shoreham Wednesday morning.

The building opened in 1810 and served as a private and public school until 1969. Most recently the building housed a daycare and a doctor’s office.

There were no injuries in the fire.

Recently, community members had pushed to renovate the building. The building had a new roof and asbestos work done and other repairs were set to begin.
