American Red Cross officials say a shelter they opened for flood victims last Thursday in Barre is still open and operating.

As of Tuesday morning, 29 people were being assisted at the shelter in the Barre Auditorium.

About 175 people sought shelter there and at another facility in Montpelier on the night the flooding hit.

School buses have added the Barre Auditorium shelter as a stop on their routes, to make sure children there can get to school.

In addition to meals, showers and other resources being made available, children have been playing basketball, and movies are being shown on a television on loan from a local merchant.

Red Cross volunteers from Vermont and New Hampshire are staffing the shelter 24 hours a day.
