The Burlington Fire Department is recognizing a Shelburne man for saving a 15-year-old boy from drowning last year in Lake Champlain.

Andrew Richardson was given the department’s first Frank Austin Citizen Service Award for pulling the boy to safety after the boy had jumped off the waterfront fishing pier and went under.

Richardson was helping a scuba diving class and was wearing full diving equipment. After the boy went under, Richardson found the boy in 20 feet of water. The boy had been under water for three minutes.

The identity of the boy wasn’t released.

Richardson pulled the boy out of the water and performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The boy was hospitalized, but made a full recovery.
