Communities across Vermont are commemorating the anniversary of the terrorist attacks in many ways. VPR provides this listing of ceremonies across the state. Scroll down the list to find events in your town.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11

Ascutney

8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Prayer vigil at Ascutney Union Church, followed by a worship service at 7:00 p.m.

Barre

7:00 p.m. Candlelight service of remembrance and appreciation. Led by Reverend Richard Forcier at the First Church of Barre

7:00 p.m. Service at Evangelical Free Church, Barre.

7:30 p.m. Service at First Presbyterian Church

7:00 p.m. Vigil at City Hall Park, sponsored by Barre service clubs.

Bennington

9:30 a.m. A documentary film, “In Memoriam: New York City 9/11/01” will be shown at the Bennington Museum. Later showings at 11:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

6:00 p.m. Ceremony at the Bennington town offices.

Brattleboro

5:15 p.m. Interfaith service, Brattleboro town common.

Burlington

9:45 -10:30 a.m. Procession down Church Street from the Unitarian Church (Pearl Street) to City Hall (Main Street). Procession led by police and fire chiefs and a riderless horse. A ceremony on the City Hall steps will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed shortly by a series of bells and moments of silence. Flags will be lowered to half-staff and the victims’ names will be read aloud.

9:45 – 10:30 a.m. Following guidelines from National Association of Fire Chiefs, Burlington Fire Department will drive trucks onto firehouse ramps for assembly. Between 10:05 and 10:28 there will be five sets of bells, sirens, and moments of silence. At 10:06 flags will be brought to half-staff and raised back at 10:29. At 10:30 the firehouses on South Winooski and North Avenue will open for public receptions.

12:15 -1:15 p.m. Lunch discussion, led by Gregory Gause. Lafayette Building, Room #408 at the University of Vermont. Contact Wendy Velander 223-0388, UVM.

5:00 p.m. Tree planting ceremony and plaque dedication at Battery Park. Speeches by Mayor Peter Clavelle, Steve Sinclair, and “Branching Out” President Chris Hadsel. Contact: 865-7166, City of Burlington.

5:00 p.m. Speech by members of the catholic clergy at Battery Park. Public address followed by a procession from Battery Park to St. Joseph’s Church, 85 Elmwood Avenue. Contact: Burlington Catholic Diocese – Father Steve Hornat 863-2388 or Gloria Gibson 658-6110

5:30 p.m. – sunset Ceremony at Waterfront Park. Flag and wreath laying ceremony, followed by candlelight vigil. 1,000 candles will be distributed to those in attendance. Choral performance by “Sweet Adelines”. Members of the community are encouraged to contribute to a community mural to be painted during the Waterfront Park ceremonies. Contact: Lt. Col. 6:30 pm Bishop Angell delivers a Memorial Mass at St. Joseph’s Church, 85 Elmwood Avenue. All police, soldiers, Knights of Columbus and emergency personnel are encouraged to attend. Contact: Father Steve Hornat 863-2388, Burlington Catholic Diocese

12:00 p.m. Dartmouth College president speaks in the College Chapel.

8:45 p.m. Bells ring at Baker Library, Dartmouth College.

9:00 a.m. Remembrance service, First Universalist Society. Service will be followed by meditation, counseling and healing.

7:00 p.m. Interfaith candlelight service, First Congregational Church.

Mendon

12:00 – 1:00 p.m. The Mendon United Methodist Church will be open for reflection and prayer.

Middlebury

8:45 a.m. Vigil, “Another World Is Possible” at the Montpelier Post Office, followed by

9:00 – 10:25 a.m. Service at the Vermont College Chapel will include art, broadcast of services in New York City and readings and reflection.

10:26 Circle on the green. Brian Webb will play the carillon to commemorate the time that the second of the Twin Towers fell.

12:00 – 4:00 p.m. The public is invited to contribute to a peace monument at Hubbard Park

Woodstock

The Billings Farm & Museum will offer free admission all day Wednesday and display a quilt entitled, “A Fireman’s Prayer Flag”.

Statewide

State historic sites are open on September 11, free of charge: Bennington Battle Monument, Coolidge State Historic Site in Plymouth Notch, Chester Arthur State Historic Site in Fairfield, Chimney Point State Historic Site, Hubbardton Battlefield, Hyde Log Cabin in Grand Isle, Senator Morrill State Historic Site in Strafford, Mount Independence State Historic Site in Orwell, and the Old Constitution House in Windsor.
