Vermont’s two U.S. Senators are planning to discuss legislation that would help the state recover from flooding caused by Tropical Storm Irene that’s in jeopardy because of congressional politics.

Sen. Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders will speak at the Burlington International Airport today before they board a flight back to Washington.

The bickering has the government on the brink of a shut down for the second time in nine months.

At issue is a small part of the $1.3 trillion budget intended to help victims of floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and other natural disasters and whether some of the expense should be offset by cuts in other government spending.

The U.S. Senate is expected to vote tonight on a spending plan that includes disaster assistance funding.
