Senator Patrick Leahy and Senator Jim Jeffords are calling on the president to release an additional $300 million in emergency heating assistance.

They say President Bush needs to consider the cold weather this month and the high price of heating fuel. The emergency money would be in addition to the $2 billion already appropriated for the program.

The Vermont Department of Public Service says heating oil costs are up 45 percent and propane up 27 percent over a year ago. State officials say applications for heating assistance are up five percent over last year.
