Senate votes to confirm Geithner

New Hampshire Republican Senator Judd Gregg says he recognizes some of the concerns about past actions by newly confirmed Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, but it’s clear to him that Geithner has the qualifications and experience for the job.

Gregg and Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen helped confirm Geithner as Treasury Secretary on Monday. Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy also voted to confirm Geithner. Independent Senator Bernie Sanders voted against the confirmation. The vote was 60 to 34.

Shaheen said she’s confident Geithner will be able to steer America out of the financial crisis faced by the nation.

Some Senate members were ambivalent about Geithner, in large part because of his failure to pay all his taxes on income received from the International Monetary Fund in 2001 and in three subsequent years.
