Senate set to approve photo licenses

The Vermont Senate has endorsed a bill that would require all new drivers in the state to have photographs on their licenses. The bill, which won preliminary approval in the Senate today, would allow already licensed drivers the option of either having photos on their licenses or not.

The vote came after debate on what should happen if a federal agency demands a database of all photos from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Senator Matt Dunne, a Windsor County Democrat, urged the Senate to keep a House provision that would require the DMV to notify the House and Senate transportation committees should it get such a request. Dunne’s proposal was rejected.
