Senate passes groundwater protection bill

The Vermont Senate has passed a bill aimed at protecting the state’s underground waters.

The bill sets up groundwater as a public trust, a type of legal protection designed to make it available to future generations.

But the bill also contains provisions designed to discourage lawsuits based on that legal status.

Passage of the measure comes at a time of increasing concern about bottled water companies extracting large amounts of Vermont’s groundwater.
