Senate delays decision on Vermont Yankee waste exemption

The Vermont Senate has decided not to proceed on the fate of a key legal change for the Vermont Yankee Nuclear power plant.
A small amendment in the appropriations bill would have transferred an exemption that allowed Vermont Yankee to store highly radioactive waste from its previous owners to Entergy Nuclear, which bought the plant almost two years ago.

Lawmakers decided today not to make that decision right now, until they hash out several issues that have arisen in connection with the plan.

Among those issues are its new ownership by an out of state company; the plant owners’ desire to boost power output by 20 percent; and the plant’s expected request for an extension of its license beyond the year 2012.
