Senate committee approves drug re-importation plan

A key Senate committee has approved a plan that would authorize importing low-cost drugs from Canada and Europe. The Senate Finance Committee unanimously approved Vermont joining a four-state initiative known as ISaveRX.

That program would make it possible for people who don’t have prescription drug insurance coverage to buy their drugs through Canada and Europe, where prices are much lower. Senators say the program may not serve a lot of people, but it would be important to those who qualified.

The bill could be debated by the full Senate by the middle of next week. The House also is considering a companion bill.
