Senate Committee Advances Telecom Bill

A Vermont Senate committee advanced a bill aimed at making it easier to build and install new telecommunications facilities in the state.

Backers of the measure say it’s needed to allow development of broadband Internet service statewide.

There’s been concern that if Vermont doesn’t speed up the process, it could lose millions of dollars in federal grants earmarked for telecom expansion.

The bill approved by the Senate Economic Development Committee would enable some new antennas to be placed on cellular phone towers and equipment boxes to be built adjacent to them without needing amended state permits.
