The Senate has given preliminary approval to a measure requiring a specific type of smoke detectors in new Vermont homes.
The bill also would require that photoelectric, rather than the much more common and somewhat less expensive ionization, detectors be installed when a home is sold.
Backers say that photoelectric detectors do a better job of giving early warning in a smoldering fire.
