Second evacuation drill planned after glitch last month

The state will be conducting a second school evacuation drill around the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant today, after a radio glitch caused problems with last month’s drill.

During the April exercise, faltering two-way radios meant many buses were not dispatched to assisted living facilities and day care centers.

Vermont Emergency Management spokesman Mark Bosma says the radios have been replaced with ones suitable for the terrain in the six town participating.

Today’s drill will test the ability of local and state emergency responders to evacuate schools, day care and health care centers in the event of an emergency at Vermont Yankee.

More than 100 responders, local officials and volunteers are expected to participate.
