A national search has begun for a new state education commissioner.

The state Board of Education says it will spend the next two months advertising the position and searching for candidates.

Former Commissioner Richard Cate left the job in June to take an administrative position with the University of Vermont.

The Education Department’s chief financial officer, Bill Talbott, has served as the acting commissioner since then.

The Education Board says it wants the new commissioner to be someone who is dedicated to educational innovation.
