Middlebury Police say they’re starting to send people home, as clean-up from yesterday’s train derailment continues.

Some people were evacuated yesterday to the American Legion on Boardman Street and hundreds of people were not able to return to their homes yesterday after 16 cars on an 18-car train derailed spilling gasoline into Otter Creek. A one-mile square area of Middlebury was evacuated.

Mark Bosma of Vermont Emergency Management says Vermont Routes 125 and 30 are now open as is U.S. Route 7 through Middlebury, but some town roads remain closed.

The Middlebury Police Department says South Pleasant Street, Charles Avenue, Water Street and Cross Street remain closed.

Middlebury Union High School and Mary Hogan Elementary School are open, but the Gailer School on Cross Street is closed.

The Middlebury Police Department says the clean up continues at this hour. Gas is being pumped from the train cars and larger equipment is headed from Pennsylvania to aid the effort.
