The Vermont Principals’ Association is going to allow the Northfield and Montpelier high schools to merge their varsity boys hockey teams this winter.

The schools developed the plan after each realized its program was at risk because they didn’t have enough players.

The association’s Standards Committee voted 4-3 Tuesday in favor of the one-year pilot project.

Association associate director Bob Johnson says the schools are expected to re-evaluate the situation at the end of the season.

The Burlington Free Press reports that Northfield Athletic Director Frank Pecora said it was unlikely either team would last this season on its own. He said there are safety concerns with small numbers of players.
