(Host) The Hazen Union School community is mourning the loss of a 2007 graduate and National Guard soldier killed in Afghanistan.
Reports say 21-year-old Tristan Southworth of Walden died Sunday. Also, Steven J. Deluzio of South Glastonbury, Conn., who was attached to the Vermont National Guard, was killed when their unit was attacked by insurgents.
In a release, school officials say Southworth is being remembered by his teachers and coaches as an outstanding student, athlete and friend. Elaine Laine is principal:
(Laine) "Tristan joined the Vermont Army National Guard while still a student at Hazen and was very proud of his service to our country. In fact, he chose to wear his military uniform for his senior photo in the yearbook. The entire Hazen community mourns his loss."
(Host) Laine says the school is making plans to remember Southworth when the students return for a new year on Monday. Some of his former classmates are still students and the school will make counselors available for students as needed. Laine says teachers are working through grief as well:
(Laine) For the teachers, it’s devastating because we’re such a small community, we know students and it’s very somber. We’re doing in-services right now, it’s the first week back for teachers, and it’s difficult for them.
(Host) The Department of Defense has yet to release details of the incident, and Vermont Guard commander Michael Dubie is planning a formal announcement this afternoon.
