School board to decide on ‘safe zone’ signs in school

The school board in Barre wants some time to decide whether it’s okay for a teacher to post a sign saying she is available to talk with students who are questioning their sexuality.

The debate was triggered when middle school art teacher Rachael Erickson had a “safe zone” sign taken from her door by a local resident. Resident David Ayer said he objects to the safe zone program’s connection with Outright Vermont. Outright Vermont is an organization that supports youth with questions about sexual orientation.

Erickson and her supporters cite the high incidence of suicide among teenagers questioning their sexuality. She says they want to keep kids safe.
