Saxtons River has been awarded $18,000 in federal grants to help with a 10-year long effort to convert a former gas station into a park.

The Community Development Block Grant money will be matched with $5,000 in donated funds and used to hire a landscape designer for the former Sandri Oil Company site. The company offered to sell the site to the village for $1, but village officials don’t want it until they’re confident it won’t be an expensive environmental liability.

The Brattleboro Reformer reports that a deal between Sandri Oil and the village hinges on what environmental testing of the site shows.
