(Host) Senator Bernie Sanders says he hopes the prospect of $4-a-gallon gasoline is enough to get the attention of Washington.
Sanders wants Congress to take action that would drive down prices for gas and home heating oil.
(Sanders) "People will tell you, `You know, we are really frightened about $3.50, $4 a gallon for gas. We can’t afford that. We can’t afford to go to work.’ People are worried about how they’re going to heat their homes next winter. This is a crisis situation. And, frankly, the White House has done virtually nothing about it. But neither has Congress.”
(Host) Sanders will meet with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Friday to discuss his proposed solutions.
Those include a windfall profits tax on the oil and gas industry, and authority for the president to set caps on gasoline prices.
Sanders also would release oil from the federal petroleum reserve, and he would demand that Saudi Arabia step up production.
