U.S. Senator-elect Bernie Sanders says the time is long overdue for the United States Senate and House to start representing the working families of America.

And he says he’ll help lead that effort in the Senate.

Sanders made those comments tonight when he declared victory in his race to fill the Senate seat of retiring Senator James Jeffords.

And Democrat state Senator Peter Welch will Sanders’ seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

By late tonight Sanders had a lead of almost 30 percentage points while Welch was ahead by about six points.

Republican Senate candidate Rich Tarrant conceded defeat and congratulated Sanders on his victory.

Welch says he feels great, but it’s too early to declare victory.
