Sandbags distributed in Montpelier

Hundreds of sandbags are distributed throughout downtown Montpelier in case there’s a spring flood.

About a hundred volunteers turned out yesterday to fill sand bags and put them around downtown businesses.

Organizers say they figure as many as 3,000 bags were filled.

There are fears of flooding this year because of a stretch of ice in the Winooski River that’s up to a mile long.

Experts fear that if there are quickly warming temperatures accompanied by rain there could be a bigger ice jam that would back the river up into the downtown. So the Montpelier Downtown Community Association organized yesterday’s event to help businesses prepare.

The city provided the sand and the bags.
