Same-sex marriage in NH hinges on compromise

Same-sex marriage supporters who hoped to be celebrating a new law instead are regrouping from the shock of seeing a legalization bill sidetracked for more debate.

Mo Baxley, executive director of the New Hampshire Freedom to Marry Coalition, said Thursday that same-sex marriage advocates are confident they have the votes to ultimately pass a bill that satisfies Gov. John Lynch’s demand for expanded religious protections.

The House rejected language Lynch demanded by two votes Wednesday, but beat back opponents efforts to kill it in hopes Lynch would then veto same-sex marriage. Instead, the House asked the Senate to negotiate a compromise.

Meanwhile, opponents are asking Lynch not to wait for the result of the negotiations and to veto same-sex marriage now.
