The Vermont Public Service Board has approved the sale of the Citizens Utilities properties in northern Vermont to the Vermont Electric Cooperative. The approval came with some stinging criticism of Citizens.

The board said the company engaged in widespread and long-standing patterns of fraud and deceit in matters within and outside the board’s jurisdiction. A Citizens spokeswoman this afternoon said the board’s comments have no basis in law or fact.

The Connecticut-based Citizens Utilities has been selling off its electric utility holdings in recent years to focus on telecommunications.
