The city of Rutland is going to continue adding fluoride to the community’s public water supply.
On Monday, the board of aldermen voted 8-2 against a proposal by Mayor Christopher Louras to ask city voters in November whether they should continue using fluoride.
The mayor made the suggestion after the cost of fluoride jumped from $8,000 last year to $14,000 this year.
But five local dentists attended the meeting and convinced the board that the chemical is worth the price, which works out to less than a dollar a day per water user.
The dentists say fluoride has greatly improved dental health.
