A memorial service is being planned for tomorrow for the Rutland city police dog killed in the line of duty.

Rutland Police Lt. Kevin Geno says the dog King Luther was hit and killed by a state police cruiser after jumping out of his handler’s vehicle along U.S. Route 7 late Tuesday.

Geno says there was a lot of noise from the cruiser’s radio and King Luther’s handler, Officer Earl Post, did not realize the dog had gotten out of the car.

There is a monument to the state’s police dogs at the Vermont Police Academy in Pittsford.

Geno says officials hope to have King Luther’s name on the monument in time for the memorial at 10 a.m. Friday.
