Rutland police cruisers equipped with computers

Police cruisers in the city of Rutland are now equipped with laptop computers.

That means officers can log into police computer networks and write reports while in their squad cars.

The addition of the laptops cuts down on time communicating with dispatchers and looking up driver records. Police say it also allows them to stay visible on the road in their cruisers.

Officials say an $80,000 dollar federal grant covered the costs of the laptops and software.

The department pays for the wireless connection to each of the 14 computers, which is about $50 a month per computer.
