Rutland High School Cannon Starts Noise Debate

Fans of the Rutland Raiders high school football team think it’s a blast when a cannon at the field gets fired after the team scores a touchdown. Some neighbors don’t, and now that those sounds have become the focus of land-use hearings under Vermont’s Act 250, school officials are annoyed.

The school district is seeking approval to change lighting fixtures on the field. But a hearing on that question turned to a discussion of noise last month, and now the district environmental commission is telling the school to tone it down. School Board President Michael Dick says that’s out of bounds.
