A woman who videotaped the destruction of a historic covered bridge in Rockingham during Tropical Storm Irene is now documenting its reconstruction online.
Rockingham resident Sue Hammond famously recorded as Irene’s floodwaters crushed the Bartonsville Bridge and swept it down the Williams River.
Her 20-second video was posted on YouTube and emerged as one of the most famous images of the destruction Vermont suffered during the storm.
Today, one wall of the reconstructed Bartonsville Bridge is up and town officials say the project is on track to be complete by mid-January. A work crew will lift the second truss later this week.
The Vermont League of Cities and Towns and the Historic Preservation Trust have both committed money for the project, and Hammond has been photographing the process of the new bridge construction.
