The town of Rockingham is planning to mark the anniversary of Tropical Storm Irene by remembering the loss of a local icon.

On August 28, the town will hold a barbecue at the site of the old Bartonsville Covered Bridge. The historic bridge was swept away in Irene’s floodwaters. The town will also celebrate the beginning of construction for a replacement bridge.

Also on the anniversary of Irene, churches, schools, and towns statewide will hold a bell ringing ceremony as a show of unity. A full minute of bell ringing will start at 7 o’clock, the evening on August 28th.
