An Army report says the Vermont National Guard soldier killed in Afghanistan last year was hit by machine gun rounds fired from inside a compound manned by U.S. Special Forces soldiers.

And the same report says that Master Sergeant Tom Stone of Tunbridge was not wearing body armor when he was shot twice while crouching behind a wall atop a building.

The report into the incident was released after the Associated Press filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the Pentagon.

The report, a collection of witness interviews, says that a Canadian Forces private was also killed by machine gun fire from the Special Forces compound. A number of American and Canadian soldiers were wounded by the same machine gun fire.

Stone, who was 52, and the Canadian soldier, died while helping repel a major nighttime attack on their compound in southern Afghanistan in 2006.
