Red foxes on the rebound in Northern New England

Red foxes are on the rebound in Vermont and New Hampshire.

So say wildlife officials, who don’t have specific numbers but confirm that the four-legged scavengers once threatened by rabies and distemper are showing up in greater numbers across northern New England.

Vermont has populations of both red foxes and gray foxes. The red foxes tend to live in open land; gray foxes in forested areas.

There have been no formal studies of fox populations. But experts say they’ve noticed more calls from the public about foxes.

John McConnell of the U.S. Department of Agriculture says the number of complaints has increased.
