A recount has confirmed the write-in election to the Bennington School Board of a former superintendent who went to jail for embezzling school funds and perjury.

George Sleeman received 45 votes on Town Meeting Day. The Saturday recount confirmed that number.

Mount Anthony Union School Board Chairwoman Sean-Marie Oller had requested the recount. She came in second with 42 votes.

Oller says she wishes Sleeman the best.

Sleeman served 13 months in prison after his 1998 conviction for stealing from school bank accounts and then lying about it.

He didn’t seek the office, but has indicated he would accept the school board spot.

Some residents feel Sleeman should resign.
