(Host) State Auditor Elizabeth Ready formally announced on Tuesday that she’s seeking a second term in office. Ready, who is a Democrat, is a former state senator from Addison County.

During her first term, Ready launched a number of investigations in addition to the primary accounting and auditing functions of her office. These probes included reviews of the state’s computer systems, the emergency response plans for the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant, the quality of nursing home care and the amount of restitution that is being collected from criminals convicted of property related crimes.

Ready says her priorities in a second term would include a comprehensive review of the different ways that the state can save money in difficult budget times:

(Ready) “For example, if there is a bill that’s passed by the General Assembly to realize savings in prescription drugs, let’s really push the pencils. Let’s look at the contracts; let’s look at whether or not we’re promulgating rules in a timely fashion. Let’s look at every step of the way to make sure that every bit of those savings are being realized. Vermont has begun a lot of great programs now it’s time to follow up and evaluate the performance.”

(Host) Ready will face former Republican House member Bruce Hyde in the November election.
