Public weighs in on Fish and Wildlife Department funding

Lawmakers are weighing legislation that would dedicate part of the state’s sales tax revenues to the Fish and Wildlife Department.

The department’s funding is a concern because sales of both hunting and fishing licenses have dropped more than 20 percent over the last 20 years.

Last night the public got to weigh in on the proposal.

Some advocates say it time to put more tax money into the department because the state has benefited from hunting, fishing, trapping and wildlife watching.

But Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Wayne LaRoche doesn’t support the tax proposal.

He says he doesn’t want to take tax revenue away from other government services and says the department has enough money from a recent increase in license revenue.
