Protesters decry use of pigs to train surgeons

A handful of people say the University of Vermont Medical school is wrong to use live pigs to help train surgeons to deal with traumatic injuries.

About 20 protesters gathered outside a building of the University of Vermont College of Medicine Wednesday where they chanted anti-disection slogans and passed out brochures entitled "UVM tortures pigs.”

Surgeon David McFadden says the Advanced Trauma Operative Management program is only for working surgeons. He says there’s no technology available that can replace the use of animals to teach surgeons how to deal with trauma.

Officials say the pigs are anesthetized before being used.

McFadden says the school is fully committed to the humane care and use of animals.
