Program launching to collect civil fines

Scofflaws, beware. The state of Vermont is going to come looking for you.

The Vermont Judicial Branch is launching a new program to try to collect $17 million dollars in overdue civil fines.

And if those who owe don’t pay up, the state could start withholding income tax refunds, referring cases to collection agencies and, for traffic tickets, suspending drivers’ licenses.

But the state is also going to make it easier for people to pay their fines. Earlier this year, the Vermont Judicial Bureau started accepting credit cards to pay fines.

And starting this month, people will be able to pay their fines online.
