A group of social and mental-health professionals is backing same sex marriage in Vermont.

The four groups say research has shown that children of same-sex parents are as likely as those of heterosexual parents to flourish.

The Vermont Psychological Association, the Vermont Psychiatric Association, the Vermont Mental Health Counselor Association and the Vermont chapter of the National Association of Social Workers announced their endorsement of the legislation on Monday.

Steve Cable is the founder of the Vermont Marriage Advisory Council, a group opposed to same sex marriage. Cable says the groups are using inconclusive science to back a political agenda.

The Vermont Legislature is expected to debate the merits of same sex marriage next week.
