A Milton priest is heading overseas with 600 Vermont army National Guard soldiers.

The Reverend John Feltz will be leaving his congregation of 840 families to provide spiritual and emotional support for the soldiers during a deployment that could last a year and a half. After mass at the Saint Ann Catholic Church in Milton this Sunday, parishioners will hold a farewell lunch for Feltz.

The 58-year-old is one of two Vermont National Guard chaplains. He and about 600 other Guard members will leave Vermont later next week – first for training in the United States and then for a mission in the Middle East. Feltz is the only pastor accompanying the soldiers on their 18-month assignment.
