Power line challenges rejected

Challenges to a new electricity transmission line proposed for the Champlain Valley all have been rejected by the Vermont Supreme Court.

The unanimous decision endorsed the conclusions of the Public Service Board.

The board approved Vermont Electric Power Company’s construction of roughly 63 miles of new transmission lines between West Rutland and South Burlington.

The towns of New Haven, Middlebury and Shelburne, the Addison County Regional Planning Commission and a private landowner in Shelburne all appealed to the Supreme Court.

They argued that the Public Service Board had inadequately considered the effect the line and associated improvements to transmission equipment would have.

But the Supreme Court examined each argument in detail and concluded that the board had weighed the arguments and the evidence appropriately.
