Poultney changes policy after coach banned

Poultney High School will require all athletic coaches to get first aid and coaching training after one of its coaches tripped an opposing player during a basketball game.

The two courses are required by the Vermont Principals’ Association but the school does not have records that its coaches had taken them.

Principal JeanMarie Oakman says students will also be required to sign a "behavior contract" each year.

She says the changes are designed to make sure coaches and players are meeting VPA standards on sport ethics.

The move comes after a junior varsity boys basketball coach was banned for life from coaching after he tripped a Proctor player during a Jan. 5 game.
