Postal Workers, Residents Pack White River Junction Meeting

Gov. Peter Shumlin has criticized what he calls "the sheer idiocy" of shutting down the White River Junction post office.

Shumlin and Vermont’s congressional delegation spoke before nearly 500 postal workers and residents Wednesday night about the post office’s future. Shumlin says, "It’s critical, as we crawl out of the worst recession in history, that we have a postal service that delivers mail when we send it, not 3 or 4 days after we send it."

Postal officials say changes such as ending mail processing in White River Junction and slowing mail delivery speeds would make the postal service more efficient.

Senator Bernie Sanders says "It is patently insane to be talking about throwing 100,000 Americans out of work."

He says there are better solutions than "cut, cut, cut."
